Armament: Keel laying for new naval reconnaissance ship
The first of three new reconnaissance ships for the German Navy will be laid down today (1 p.m.) in Wolgast. The fleet service boats, equipped with the latest sensor technology, will be used for electronic reconnaissance and information gathering - a task that is becoming increasingly important in view of the increasing damage to infrastructure in the Baltic Sea.
The Bremen-based Naval Vessels Lürssen Group (NVL) was awarded the contract for construction. Work on the ships will take place at several shipyards in northern Germany. Large sections will be built at the Peene shipyard in Wolgast.
From 2029, the approximately 130-meter-long ships are to replace the current fleet service boats, which have already been in use for more than 30 years. According to earlier information, the Budget Committee had approved two billion euros for the purchase in 2021.
