Donald Trump: US intervenes in the war with Iran

The dispute over Iran's nuclear program has been simmering for decades. The West accuses Tehran's leadership of pursuing nuclear weapons under the pretext of civilian use of nuclear energy. Iran denies this.

At the end of last week, the conflict between Iran and Israel escalated. Since then, mutual attacks have continued, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of people in Iran and about two dozen in Israel, according to the respective governments. Several high-ranking military officers and nuclear scientists were killed in Iran.

Efforts by Western states to defuse the conflict have so far been unsuccessful. However, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (62) expressed cautious optimism on Friday after talks between the foreign ministers of Germany, France, and Great Britain and their Iranian counterpart.
