Lichtenberg: Exclusion zone replaces surveillance zone to protect against epidemics

The Lichtenberg district office has replaced the surveillance zone set up because of foot-and-mouth disease with a restricted zone. On Tuesday, February 25, the new animal health authority measure will be introduced: a so-called containment zone. The district office announced this. The Lichtenberg district was previously partially in the surveillance zone, in which strict legal rules on animal traffic applied.
In January, an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in water buffaloes was officially confirmed in the Märkisch-Oderland district. This highly contagious animal disease primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals and poses considerable economic risks. The disease was last detected in Germany in 1988, while the last occurrence in the EU was registered in Bulgaria in 2011.
