Police arrest two suspected Louvre burglars

About a week after the coup, the investigations are gaining momentum.
Two suspects were arrested in France on Saturday evening in connection with the jewel theft from the Louvre Museum . The Paris public prosecutor's office confirmed this to the German Press Agency. One of the men was planning to board a flight to Algeria at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport. The second suspect was arrested later that evening in the Paris suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis.
Officers from the National Border Police Directorate (DNPAF) arrested them and subsequently handed them over to investigators from the Anti-Bandit Brigade (BRB) of the Paris Criminal Investigation Department. According to the newspaper Le Parisien, the two men are in their 30s and were previously known to the police. The suspects were taken into custody on charges of gang theft and criminal association.
Last Sunday, a four-man gang of thieves stole eight valuable pieces with an estimated value of €88 million from the Louvre's collection. They used a crane to break into the world's most-visited museum during opening hours and smashed a window on an upper floor. They then fled on motorcycles.
The theft made headlines around the world and sparked a debate in France about the Louvre's security measures.
