A quarter of all pensioners live on less than 1500 euros a month
Almost a quarter of all pensioners live on less than 1,500 euros a month, and more than half have more than 2,000 euros at their disposal.
This is the result of an evaluation by the Federal Statistical Office, which the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance commissioned from the authority and which is available to "Bild am Sonntag".
According to the study, 1.35 million pensioners (7.4 percent) lived on less than €1,100 net equivalent income in 2024. Household incomes are compared using a specific formula. In 2022, the number was 1.79 million, or 10 percent, or 440,000 more.
2.6 million pensioners (14.3 percent) lived on less than 1,300 euros (3.35 million or 18.8 percent in 2022). 4.4 million pensioners (23.8 percent, almost a quarter) lived on less than 1,500 euros a month (5.28 million or 29.6 percent in 2022).
In 2024, 4.4 million pensioners (24.4 percent) lived on a net monthly income of between 1,500 and 2,000 euros. And 9.5 million pensioners (51.8 percent) lived on a net monthly income of more than 2,000 euros in 2024.
BSW founder Sahra Wagenknecht told "Bild am Sonntag": "If almost one in four people in old age has to live below or at the poverty line, then that is a disgrace for our country." Economist and pension expert Professor Bernd Raffelhüschen (University of Freiburg) contradicted this in "Bild": " The elderly in Germany are indeed the ones with the highest wealth compared to all other age groups. Low-earning single people and children in Germany have a significantly higher risk of poverty and also a significantly lower standard of living than the elderly." Studies have shown this.
