Deutsche Bahn is receiving nearly 20 billion euros from the federal government to modernize its rail network. But parts of the board want to build less, not more, in favor of punctuality. Politicians and the supervisory board are alarmed.

Deutsche Bahn is in a dilemma. For years, it has told politicians that the dilapidated infrastructure is to blame for the state-owned company's dire situation, and that only many, many billions of euros could clear the backlog of repairs. Eventually, Deutsche Bahn CEO Richard Lutz's voice was heard; last year, more money flowed into the state-owned company than ever before, a total of 18 billion euros. According to information from the Süddeutsche Zeitung, the amount will be even higher in 2025, with Deutsche Bahn set to receive a total of 19.8 billion euros this year.
