Leading EU politicians welcome Israel's military strike against Iran

Brussels – Following Israel's major attack on Iran, leading EU politicians have thrown their support behind Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government. It must be clear "that Israel is currently waging an important fight in the region against Islamist terror, led by Iran," said Manfred Weber (CSU), party and parliamentary group leader of the European Christian Democrats (EPP), to the "Welt am Sonntag" newspaper. For example, Lebanon today has a chance for peaceful, democratic development "because Israel has pushed back Hezbollah." The EU must stand by Israel, Weber demanded. The chair of the Committee on Security and Defense in the EU Parliament, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann (FDP), told the Sonntagszeitung newspaper: "It is understandable that Israel has now put an end to the Iranian nuclear program by military means." The day will come when Europe will be grateful to Israel for preventing Iran from building a nuclear bomb. "Israel's attack on Iran ultimately also means greater security for Europe." However, this only applies "if international diplomacy de-escalates the situation now and prevents escalation," the EU politician said.
