Pelvic floor training isn't just for women: Doctors recommend daily exercises for men over 50 – and warn against useless gadgets. Here's how to do it right.
More and more men over 50 are confronted with online advertisements for so-called "Kegel trainers" – devices that supposedly stop incontinence and improve sex life. But doctors are skeptical of these hyped products.
As the Daily Mail reports, experts warn that many of these fitness gadgets are ineffective. Instead, they recommend targeted pelvic floor training – without any equipment.
Dr. Ashwin Sridhar of University College London Hospital explains: "All men over 50 can benefit from daily pelvic floor exercises." Studies show that such exercises can improve bladder control, relieve erectile dysfunction, and even protect against premature ejaculation. Physiotherapist James Pollen also emphasizes: "Many mistakenly believe that pelvic floor exercises are only for women."
Experts advise against excessive training—it can even lead to pain or erection problems in younger men. A moderate, correctly executed program is important.

- Tighten and lift the pelvic floor muscles
- Hold for five seconds, slowly release
- Pause briefly and repeat
- Up to eight to ten repetitions – if possible, increase to ten seconds
Rapid contractions:
- Five to ten short, strong contractions with immediate release
Important instructions:
- Aim for three training sessions per day
- Maximum of ten repetitions per unit – only more if medically recommended
- If you experience pain, stop exercising and seek medical advice
