Fritz Erpenbeck returned from Soviet exile in April 1945 and founded the Berliner Zeitung. His granddaughter wonders who he was.

"It was easy to determine where paper warehouses, as well as where typesetting and printing machines of the major newspaper groups, lay buried under the mountains of rubble in the city center. Naturally, much of the paper would have been charred or damp, and naturally the machines would have been smashed, their metal parts annealed, and all the typesetting material melted.
