No more free cash withdrawals at gas stations - CashGroup banks end cooperation with Shell Cologne.

Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger / No more free cash withdrawals at gas stations...
(ots) - Customers of the major banks affiliated with the Cash Group will soon no longer be able to withdraw cash for free at Shell gas stations. As the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger" (Saturday edition) reports, citing spokespeople from Commerzbank and Deutsche Bank, the cooperation will end at the end of June this year. The Cash Group includes credit institutions such as Deutsche Bank, Postbank, Commerzbank, Hypovereinsbank, and their subsidiaries. The service was initially introduced for Postbank customers in 2010 and later expanded to the other institutions. The option to withdraw money at Shell gas stations was popular with customers because, unlike retailers, the stations are open on Sundays and public holidays and late at night, and waiting times are short.
Postbank has set up a new system to supply its customers with cash. "Since November 2024, Postbank customers have had an alternative with the Bargeld Code, which allows them to withdraw or deposit up to €1,000 daily at 12,500 retailers," a bank spokesperson told the newspaper. The service is available in an app. There, customers can generate a barcode with which they can withdraw or deposit money at a participating retailer within two hours. They must present the barcode at the checkout. The process will be introduced later for Deutsche Bank customers. Customers without a smartphone or app will increasingly rely on the dwindling ATM network in the future.
