A win against Slovenia in the opening game was considered a must. However, the first half in particular made it clear why Andrej Razdrh's team had finished first in their qualifying group for the European Championship in Slovakia. The Slovenians certainly posed a problem for the German U21s. The fact that they still went into the break with a comfortable 2-0 lead was thanks to striker Woltemade, who put the team on the road to victory with two goals.
"It was an important start for us," the 23-year-old said after the game on Sat1 . "We didn't really know what to expect, we didn't know our opponents. That's why we're very happy now."
Second U-21 hat-trick in a rowAfter a balanced first 45 minutes, coach Antonio Di Salvio's team conceded little after the break and comfortably held on for the win. Woltemade again put the finishing touches on the game, scoring from the penalty spot to add another hat-trick to his hat-trick against Spain in the European Championship dress rehearsal . "Three goals... that tastes really good," enthused the VfB striker.
For the 23-year-old, however, it was primarily about starting the European Championship with a sense of success: "I think it's very important for the team spirit that we now see where we're at." Such a start is therefore "very good."
Rhythm becomes "difficult to maintain"Looking ahead to the upcoming group match against the Czech Republic on Sunday (9 p.m., LIVE! on kicker), Woltemade is aware that his scoring rhythm will be "difficult to maintain," but: "As long as we win, it's perfectly fine for me to keep scoring three goals."
The run of the 1.98 meter tall center forward has naturally also been noted by Di Salvo, who said: "His run with us is uncanny, but he is welcome to continue like this."
