"AC Milan and Sergio Conceicao will not continue their journey together next season," the Italian club's website states succinctly. It continues: "The club would like to thank Sergio and his staff for their commitment, professionalism, and dedication shown during their time in charge of the first team over the past few months."
The 50-year-old took over as coach of Milan at the end of December and quickly celebrated the team's first title. Just a few days after taking office, Conceicao and AC Milan won the Italian Supercoppa final against Inter. The Rossoneri turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory .
The beginning of a successful era? As has been known since Thursday at the latest: no. Because the club decided to release the Portuguese after just a few months.
Only 8th place - cup final lostAfter winning the title in early January, things were anything but smooth for Milan on the pitch. AC Milan reached the Champions League playoffs, but as favorites, they lost to Feyenoord Rotterdam after 0-1 and 1-1 draws .
And in the league, the club also failed to achieve the desired result. Milan finished only eighth , thus missing out on qualification for European competition. Another bitter disappointment was the cup final loss to Bologna FC, which, had they won, would have secured Europa League participation.
Former Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri is being tipped by Italian media as his successor. The 57-year-old previously managed AC Milan between 2010 and 2014.
