Bundesliga: Horst Steffen becomes coach of Werder Bremen

Bundesliga: Horst Steffen becomes coach of Werder Bremen

The 56-year-old comes to the Weser from Elversberg in Saarland. According to media reports, Steffen has signed a contract until 2028.

Werder Bremen has found a successor for Ole Werner and officially confirmed the appointment on Thursday: Horst Steffen will lead the Bundesliga club as head coach next season. According to media reports, he signed a three-year contract, and Werder paid a transfer fee of between €300,000 and €350,000 for him. Steffen will be officially unveiled next Monday.

The personnel change at the Green-Whites comes just two days after Werner was released by the club. Werner, for his part, announced earlier this week that he did not intend to extend his contract, which expires in 2026.

Horst absolutely impressed us in our discussions, both personally and professionally. He has done an outstanding job at Elversberg over the past seven years. Horst stands for attacking, attractive football and very good, clear team leadership. We are confident that we are well prepared for the new season with him. (Werder Managing Director Clemens Fritz)

Steffen stands for "offensive, attractive football"

Steffen narrowly missed the crowning glory of his success story at SV Elversberg last Monday. Since 2018, he had led the club from the Regionalliga to third place in the 2. Bundesliga. However, the Saarlanders were eliminated in the Bundesliga relegation play-offs by FC Heidenheim.

"Horst stands for attacking, attractive football and very good and clear team leadership," added Managing Director Clemens Fritz. He is convinced that with Steffen, "we are well prepared for the new season."

"I quickly decided on Werder"

The 56-year-old was a former professional himself, making 207 Bundesliga and 75 second division appearances for Bayer Uerdingen, Borussia Mönchengladbach, and MSV Duisburg. Before Elversberg, Steffen worked as head coach at Chemnitzer FC, Stuttgarter Kickers, and Preußen Münster, as well as in the youth academy of Borussia Mönchengladbach and MSV Duisburg. His engagement at Werder Bremen marks his first Bundesliga appearance.

During the discussions, the management showed me great appreciation and explained what the club's plans were for the coming years. This exchange absolutely convinced me, and I quickly decided to join Werder Bremen. (Werder coach Horst Steffen)
