Concern for Aitana Bonmatí: Football star in hospital shortly before the European Championship

Spain's national team may be without one of its talented players at the European Championships in Switzerland. Aitana Bonmatí is in the hospital.
The 2025 Women's European Football Championship, which will be held in eight locations in Switzerland , begins on June 2. One day later, the Spanish national team will play its first match of the tournament against Portugal. However, one key player may not be able to attend. Aitana Bonmatí is currently hospitalized with viral meningitis.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed this. Its website states: "Her course of action is uncertain." The 27-year-old had to watch her teammates' final warm-up match before the European Championship from her hospital bed.
Spanish coach Montse Tomé also commented on Bonmatí's condition after a friendly against Japan and was able to offer at least some reassurance: "At first, everything was fine, but the last examination revealed that she has viral meningitis. The word is scary, [...] but in principle, it's under control." However, Tomé also explained that "the timetable" is uncertain. Whether Bonmatí will recover quickly enough to participate in the European Championship remains to be seen.

The Spanish national team has been together since Sunday (June 22). It was only on Thursday that Bonmatí first showed symptoms and developed a high fever. It's unclear whether one of her teammates may have contracted the virus from her. According to " Bild, " the entire team must therefore be examined.
The two-time Ballon d'Or winner herself hasn't commented on the whole matter yet. She simply shared a photo from her hospital bed with her 1.9 million followers, leaving it uncommented except for an emoji.
