When the national anthems are played before football matches, the European Championship stars mostly wear serious expressions. The only exception is goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger.
Germany is now in the semifinals and will face Spain on July 23rd at 9 p.m. for a place in the final – and there's a lot of money at stake for the European Championship stars . When the respective national anthems are played before kickoff, Ann-Katrin Berger is particularly noticeable. Why?

Some players keep their eyes closed reverently during their country's national anthem. Others stare stoically forward, while still others let their gaze wander across the stands, fully absorbing the atmosphere. But one thing is the same for all of them: a stern, even serious expression. And then there's Ann-Katrin Berger.
While the German goalkeeper sings the anthem, Berger practically beams. A fact that makes her noticeably out of step with the crowd. But why does the goalkeeper laugh so heartily during the anthem? It's thanks to her grandfather and mother. "They always asked me why most players look so serious and dogged when the anthem is played. Actually, playing for the national team should be a joy," Ann-Katrin Berger told " Bild ."

"That's why I always smile. Posture and charisma are extremely important. And besides, I play football because it's fun. I've always wanted to do it; it's a pure passion. Especially when I'm on the pitch for Germany," she explains.
