Diogo Jota and his brother were buried on Saturday, July 5, in their hometown of Gondomar – where he took his first steps in football, found his great love Rute Cardoso and recently married.
Diogo Jota's funeral in Gondomar was attended by numerous current and former Liverpool FC players, as well as coaches and club officials. Captain Virgil van Dijk was particularly emotional, carrying a floral arrangement in the shape of a Liverpool shirt with Jota's number 20 on the back. Andrew Robertson and coach Arne Slot were also present to pay their respects to Jota.
Neither Portugal's football icon Cristiano Ronaldo nor Jürgen Klopp, the former successful Liverpool FC coach and one-time mentor to Diogo Jota, were among the mourners. As the British "Daily Mirror" reports, Ronaldo did not want to be the center of attention with his presence – out of respect for the deceased and his grieving relatives.
