Olympique Lyon is forced to relegate

(sda/afp) Debt-ridden former French champions Olympique Lyon are facing forced relegation. The traditional club must relegate to Ligue 2 following a ruling by the French football financial regulator DNCG.

At a hearing on Tuesday, American owner John Textor tried in vain to convince the responsible authority to lift the sanctions imposed on the seven-time champions in November. These included forced relegation due to debts amounting to €175 million.
Lyon can appeal the DNCG's decision. Xherdan Shaqiri's former club finished last season in sixth place in Ligue 1, which would have qualified them for the Europa League.
