The German juniors are causing a sensation at the French Open. Max Schönhaus and Niels McDonald are in the final of the junior competition and are dueling for the title.

The 17-year-old Schönhaus beat Bulgarian Ivan Ivanov 6:3, 6:4 on Friday. His compatriot Niels McDonald, the same age, easily defeated Japanese Ryo Tabata 6:2, 6:2 in the other semifinal.

Both players had to overcome critical moments during the tournament . Niels McDonald sensationally eliminated the number one seed, Spaniard Andres Santamarta Roig, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the round of 16. He particularly impressed with his versatility.

Schönhaus was on the verge of elimination against the American Benjamin Willwerth. In the third-set tiebreak, he already had match points, but missed them and suddenly found himself with two match points of his own. He ultimately held his nerve to win 6:3, 1:6, and 7:6.

The last German junior title was won 28 years ago by Daniel Elsner. Alexander Zverev reached the junior final in 2013. There, he lost to Chilean Christian Garin 4-6, 1-6. While Zverev is currently ranked number 3 in the world , his opponent at the time is ranked well outside the top 100. However, no one can take away the Chilean's Grand Slam title.

In the junior women's competition, however, the last German player was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Julia Stusek lost to Austrian Lilli Tagger 0:6 and 4:6. The junior from Germany's neighboring country also made it to the final on Friday.
