Three days after losing the Champions League final: Coach Simone Inzaghi leaves Inter Milan

(dpa) After losing the Champions League final, coach Simone Inzaghi is leaving Inter Milan and, according to consistent media reports, is moving to Saudi Arabia. The decision to part ways was "made by mutual agreement," the Italian runners-up said in a statement.

The 49-year-old Inzaghi is said to have accepted the offer from al-Hilal, as reported by Sky Sport Italia and the "Gazzetta dello Sport," among others. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reported that Inzaghi will sign a three-year contract with the Saudi club this week. The contract includes a "huge salary." The media had recently reported an offer of €50 million per season.
Emotional farewell wordsAccording to Gazzetta dello Sport, Inzaghi will fly to the USA this weekend, where his new club will participate in the Club World Cup from June 14 to July 13.
"Every day I dedicated my first and last thoughts to Inter," Inzaghi said in his farewell statement on the traditional Italian club's website: "We were sincere and decided together to end this great journey."
Inzaghi's contract with Inter was actually valid until 2026, and he was doing "very well," the coach said before last Saturday's 5-0 defeat in the Champions League final in Munich against Paris Saint-Germain. However, he refused to promise a definitive stay with the Nerazzurri after the final whistle: "I can't answer that question at the moment."
According to "Gazzetta dello Sport," the great disappointment of the final defeat was one reason for the decision against Inter. But fatigue after a long and strenuous tenure was also a deciding factor.
The newspaper has also already named the allegedly favored successor to Inzaghi: Cesc Fàbregas. The Spaniard, currently under contract with Italian first division club Como 1907, is also reportedly high on the list for Bundesliga club RB Leipzig's coaching search.
