Life on a cruise ship means you're always surrounded by lots of other people. Christine reveals what can be annoying at times.

Christine spends six months of the year on a cruise ship and shares her experiences. The 44-year-old runs her business while traveling and loves the lifestyle she and her husband enjoy on a ship with around 1,400 guests.

However, there is one habit many passengers have that she finds disgusting: "I find it horrible when guests go straight to the buffet after the gym without washing their hands," she told the Daily Mail .

The advantages, however, outweigh the disadvantages: "I don't have to pay for gas or food, make my bed, do my laundry, or clean my room," says the 44-year-old. Her life feels like a "constant vacation."

Of course, there are also things she misses, including an ice-cold McDonald's Diet Coke and a good Wi-Fi connection.

Kevin Martin was a lawyer. But four years ago, he quit his job to travel the world. Like Christine, he spent the last year on cruise ships. He has two tips for anyone interested in trying out this lifestyle: "Be sure you book a cruise where it's easy to do laundry," says the American. Laundry is very expensive on many ships, so those interested should clarify this before booking.

Cruise lines also offer loyalty programs. The longer passengers stay on board, the more perks they receive. Martin's tip is: "Find out which loyalty program suits you."

For this amount, they receive a cabin, meals, Wi-Fi, and cleaning service. Johan Canen emphasized that life on board is cheaper than before, adding: "We don't need things anymore; we just want adventures and experiences."

  • In 2024, 34.6 million people took an ocean cruise. In 2023, the number is expected to be 31.7 million, according to the Cruise Lines International Association .
  • 37.7 million passengers are expected for 2025.
  • According to the Hamburg Port Authority, a total of more than 1.2 million passengers went on cruises from the Hanseatic City of Hamburg in 2023 – a record.
  • The "Icon of the Seas" is the largest cruise ship in the world. It is over 360 meters long.
