Second life: 2nd Cut Hike Socks: Recycled socks from Smartwool

Photo: Smartwool
The US merino specialist Smartwool was founded in 1994 by a group of skiers who simply wanted to keep their feet warm on the slopes. After experimenting with various materials, they finally settled on merino wool. As a natural, functional material, this wool combines all the desired properties: It's soft, moisture-wicking, thermoregulating (warm in cold weather and cool in hot weather), sustainable, odor-neutralizing, and feels extremely comfortable next to the skin.
In 2025, the US manufacturer will continue its sustainable 2nd Cut project in Europe, launching new versions of its successful 2nd Cut hiking socks . One-third of these socks are made from production waste and parts of old socks collected and recycled through the company's own take-back program. The result: climate-regulating hiking socks that are not only sustainable but also functional.
In addition to new colors, the new wool socks for summer 2025 feature lighter padding for warmer days. These sustainable hiking socks come in a calf-high version for outdoor enthusiasts who prefer sturdy hiking boots, or in an ankle-high version for those who prefer lightweight trekking shoes.
