A magnitude 5 earthquake hits northeast India

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck northeastern India on Thursday, with no immediate reports of casualties or serious damage. The quake came just ten days after two other tremors struck the north of the country, also without causing significant damage.
The earthquake occurred at 2:25 a.m. local time with an epicenter at a depth of 16 kilometers in the northeastern state of Assam, the National Center for Seismology of India reported on X.
So far, authorities have not reported any casualties or damage to infrastructure as a result of the quake, which was also felt in parts of neighbouring Bangladesh, according to Bangladeshi media.
Assam is located in one of the most earthquake-prone areas of India, south of the Himalayan mountain range, although most are usually of low magnitude.
Northern India was hit by two more earthquakes on Monday last week . The first, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake, struck in the early hours of the morning with its epicentre in New Delhi, awakening many residents but causing no serious damage.
Hours after the earthquake in the capital New Delhi , another earthquake shook the state of Bihar.
In 1950, Assam experienced one of the largest earthquakes in recent continental history, with a magnitude of 8.4, which caused the death of thousands of people.
