Acevedo deserved to be called up to the national team: Jared Borgetti

Historic Santos Laguna striker Jared Borgetti spoke out after Carlos Acevedo was absent from the National Team squad.

Through social media, Borgetti expressed his disagreement, pointing out that the individual performance of the Laguna goalkeeper should not be affected by the team's bad streak.

"Carlos Acevedo should not pay for the team's bad run by being ignored in the squad, his level is at least above the 4 who are on the pre-list," said the former footballer.

He also questioned the decision of those called up, stating that Acevedo is only below Luis Malagón.

“Leaving aside Malagón, who I think is the one who is in the best form right now, I think Acevedo can be anywhere among the other four, without a doubt,” he said.

Borgetti also defended Acevedo's performance, arguing that he has been key in avoiding a greater number of goals against, despite the team's poor form.

"I understand that Santos Laguna is not going through its best moment, it has had a very bad tournament that will be forgotten, but not Acevedo. He has had very good matches, saves that you cannot even imagine, and if it were not for him, Santos would have conceded many more goals," he said.

“Just because the team is doing badly doesn’t mean your goalkeeper is doing badly. He is the goalkeeper with the most saves at the moment. Saves that really deserve to get you back on your feet,” he added.

Finally, he asked the coaches to pay more attention to Santos Laguna's matches in future call-ups.

Under the command of Javier Aguirre, El Tri will play a series of friendlies in South America, after qualifying for the semifinals of the Concacaf Nations League.
