Spain is facing an extreme heat wave, with temperatures triggering alerts well before the official start of summer. The Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a special warning for the week of June 16-22, during which temperatures are expected to be well above normal . The map published by the agency shows a darker shade of orange than usual for this time of year, reflecting the upcoming heat intensity.
During this episode, temperatures could exceed 35°C in much of the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, and reach 40°C in parts of the southern and northeastern half. Areas such as the Guadalquivir Valley, Extremadura, and inland Catalonia are among the most exposed. The increase will be widespread and progressive, with a particular impact starting Tuesday.

The nights won't bring any relief either. According to the AEMET (Mexico City Meteorological Agency), in some areas of the southern peninsula, lows will remain above 22 or 24°C, resulting in very warm, even tropical, nights. These types of nighttime temperatures pose an added risk , especially for older people or those with chronic conditions.
The anticyclone will generate atmospheric stability, favoring clear skies across most of the country. Only Ceuta, Melilla, Galicia, and the Cantabrian Sea could experience temporary cloud cover at the beginning of the week. Conditions will be ideal for heat accumulation, with hardly any wind or humidity.
Although the weather will be generally dry, occasional thunderstorms, especially in mountainous areas, are not entirely ruled out. The AEMET (Meteorological Agency) warns that some could reach significant intensity , although they may not continue or have widespread impact.

Looking ahead to the week of June 23-29, the forecast maintains the warm trend , although with some increased uncertainty. The heat is likely to continue to dominate most of the country, especially on the Mediterranean coast and inland areas.
Drinking water frequently, avoiding the hottest hours of the day, and keeping an eye on vulnerable groups will be key measures to face this week in June.
