Boston takes the series

Boston takes the series

Carlos Narváez put Boston ahead with a three-run homer against his former team in the sixth inning, and the Red Sox overcame two home runs by Aaron Judge in an 11-7 victory over the New York Yankees last night.

Rafael Devers also went deep as Boston matched his season high with five home runs to take two of three games at Yankee Stadium in the season opener between the old rivals.

Judge hit a pair of two-run homers for his fourth multi-homer game this season and the 43rd of his career. He fired in the first inning against rookie Hunter Dobbins (3-1) and again in the ninth, finishing the night with a .396 batting average.

Boston rookie Kristian Campbell hit a two-run homer off Rodón in the fifth. Abraham Toro and Trevor Story also homered in the eighth off Jonathan Loaisiga.

GEORGE KIRBY struck out a career-high 14 batters over seven two-hit innings, and the Seattle Mariners snapped their five-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Kirby (1-3) didn't issue a walk while retiring his first 11 batters and his last 10. His strikeouts were the most by a Mariners pitcher since James Paxton collected 16 in May 2018, and he tied Miami's Max Meyer for the most in a major league game this season.

Mexican Andrés Muñoz earned his 18th save, returning after a week of rest and recovering from two consecutive failed save opportunities.

CLAYTON KERSHAW allowed one run in five innings to record his first win since last August, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-3 to avoid a three-game sweep. Kershaw (1-0) threw 82 pitches, allowed six hits, struck out seven and issued no walks.

The 37-year-old left-hander hadn't struck out at least seven since June 8, 2023, in Cincinnati, and his last win also came in St. Louis on August 18, 2024.

PETE ALONSO and JEFF MCNEIL each hit two of New York's six home runs, and the Mets routed Colorado 13-5 to sweep the Rockies, the worst team in major leagues, for the second time in a week.

Brett Baty and Francisco Álvarez also went deep for the Mets, who completed a 5-2 road trip and finished 6-0 against Colorado (12-53) this season. They moved a season-high 18 games over .500 at 42-24 and opened a 4 1/2-game lead in the NL East over the slumping Philadelphia.

YANDY DÍAZ hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the fifth inning and his double in the eighth drove in the decisive run as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Miami Marlins 3-2.

MAX MUNCY homered and Jacob Wilson and Tyler Soderstrom each had two hits and an RBI as the Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 to win their first series in more than a month.

Mike Yastrzemski drove in three runs as the Giants extended their winning streak to five games with a 4-3 victory over the Braves. San Francisco swept the three-game series and handed Atlanta its seventh straight loss.

JACK FLAHERTY struck out nine in six scoreless innings and the Detroit Tigers blanked the Chicago Cubs 4-0, taking two of three games in a matchup between two of the best teams in Major League Baseball.

Brooks Lee and Christian Vazquez hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning and the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays 6-3 to avoid a sweep and snap a three-game losing streak. — AP
