In fact, the NWS warns that heat is often the leading cause of weather-related deaths each year. "Heat waves have the potential to affect a large area, exposing large numbers of people to a dangerous combination of heat and humidity, which can be very taxing on the body," they explain on the NWS's website .

For this reason, the specialized meteorological services office offers the following recommendations:
- Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible.
- Limit strenuous outdoor activities, seek shade.
- Use sunscreen every day, even if the sky is cloudy.
- Inside buildings, pay attention to the elderly , the sick, and people without air conditioning.
- Never leave babies, children, or pets unattended in a vehicle . Always check before locking your car.
The NWS indicates that child car deaths due to heat waves are always preventable. However, the outlook still warns that they continue to occur. Statistics show that, in 2025 , 21 children have already died from this cause nationwide. Data compiled by San Jose State University indicates that, last year, the total number of deaths was 59 children and infants.
In the event of severe thunderstorms, follow these NWS recommendations:
- Take shelter in a sturdy structure away from windows; a basement or cellar is usually best.
- Remember that severe thunderstorms produce damaging winds and/or large hail.
- Being inside a vehicle is safer than being outside.
- Seek shelter before the storm and remain there until the NWS gives the warning signal.
