León | Residents of three Palencia towns evacuated due to the Canalejas fire
The Palencia towns of Villalba de Guardo, Fresno del Río, and Mantinos (a combined population of 516) have been evacuated as a precaution due to the Canalejas forest fire, which has been raging since Saturday afternoon in the neighboring province of León. Hours earlier, the fire also forced the lockdown of the town of Guardo (Palencia), with a population of more than 5,500.
The Integrated Operational Coordination Center (Cecopi) of Castile and León has agreed to evacuate these three towns and evacuate 564 people as a precautionary measure in anticipation of the spread of the fire. Of these, 130 have been housed in the Saldaña sports center and four in senior citizen residences in the town, while the rest have gone to relatives' homes or returned to their homes, as many were in Villalba and Fresno during the patron saint festivities, José Antonio Rubio Mielgo, the regional delegate of the regional government and president of Cecopi, confirmed to Efe.
Rubio Mielgo explained that the most worrying focus is the Canalejas fire, due to its extreme virulence and westward winds of up to 40 kilometers per hour throughout the afternoon, which have complicated extinguishing efforts. (Efe)
