Tragic defeat for Santos: 6-0

Tragic defeat for Santos: 6-0

Vasco da Gama delivered a historic 6-0 thrashing of Neymar's Santos in the twentieth matchday of the Brazilian Championship, played yesterday at the Morumbi Stadium in Sao Paulo.

Vasco won with two goals from Philippe Coutinho (54' and 62') and goals from Lucas Piton (18'), David (52'), Rayan (60') and Tché Tché (68').

It was the biggest thrashing the Rio de Janeiro club had inflicted on Santos in 98 years and the heaviest defeat suffered at home in the local league.

Neymar played the full 90 minutes, but was a shadow of his usual form. He only stood out with a spectacular backheel assist that was ruled out for offside. At the end of the match, Vasco's coach, Fernando Diniz, consoled the forward, who left the field in tears and without commenting.

There were already consequences

Santos dismissed coach Cleber Xavier hours after the match.

Xavier, who has officiated 15 matches since May, has collected five wins, four draws and six losses.

Neymar heartbroken

"I'm totally disappointed with our game. You have every right to protest, but without violence. It's a very shameful feeling. I've never experienced this in my life," said the former Barcelona and PSG player.— AP
