Trump 'closes' Harvard: Which Mexican politicians studied or taught at the university?

U.S. President Donald Trump has lashed out at Harvard University, revoking the school's ability to enroll foreign students .

Prior to the White House ban, some Mexican politicians and public officials had the privilege of studying at one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, which enrolls nearly 6,800 foreign students , most of them in graduate programs.

Now, the thousands of international students currently studying at Harvard will have to transfer to other schools or lose their legal permission to remain in the United States .

Which politicians studied at Harvard?

In addition to studying law at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), former President Miguel de la Madrid (1982-1988) received a scholarship from the Bank of Mexico (Banxico) to study for a master's degree in Public Administration at Harvard University.

Carlos Salinas de Gortari earned a bachelor's degree in Economics from UNAM and subsequently continued his studies at Harvard University, obtaining a master's degree in Public Administration in 1973. He also earned a master's degree in Political Economy in 1976, as well as a doctorate in Political Economy and Government in 1978, from the same academic institution.

Former PAN president Felipe Calderón Hinojosa is a lawyer who graduated from the Escuela Libre de Derecho and obtained a master's degree in economics from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico (ITAM) as well as a master's degree in public administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University .

Tatiana Clouthier Carillo, former Secretary of Economy (2021–2022), is taking two diploma courses at the university, one in Governance and the other in Economic and Political Perspectives for Mexico.

Gerardo Esquivel Hernández , who served as Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mexico, he holds a PhD in Economics from the same institution.

Finally, Alfredo Gutiérrez Ortiz Mena, Minister of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN) has a master's degree in Law from Harvard University.
