Two-centimeter-high rocks and flooding in ravines: Aemet warnings for these areas of Spain

Two-centimeter-high rocks and flooding in ravines: Aemet warnings for these areas of Spain

Severe storms, large hail, and flash floods . The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued major warnings for much of the northern half of the Iberian Peninsula this Friday. The alerts particularly affect regions such as Aragon, Navarre, Castile and León, La Rioja, the Basque Country , and northern Castile-La Mancha, where a very difficult day is expected in terms of weather.

According to the Aemet (Mexico City Meteorological Agency), heavy rainfall of up to 40 liters per square meter per hour is expected, enough to cause local flooding and overflowing of ravines , gullies, and other waterways in rural and urban areas. This type of rainfall, in addition to its intensity, can be accompanied by significant electrical activity.

In its official X profile, Aemet has also warned of the risk of large hail, with stones that could exceed two centimeters in diameter , an unusual but not impossible condition during stormy episodes in the Iberian Peninsula summer. These stones can damage crops, vehicles, and even fragile roofs.

The other concern is the wind. Very strong gusts will accompany the storms, especially in open areas or mountainous regions, where conditions can change in a matter of minutes. In some cases, winds could exceed 80 kilometers per hour.

Emergency services and Civil Protection have already urged people to exercise extreme caution and avoid outdoor activities in the warning areas. They also recommend not parking vehicles near trees or objects that could fall. Prevention can prevent unnecessary scares , especially in areas where intense storms have occurred in previous days.

Although these phenomena are typical of summer, the severity of this episode is higher than usual, which has led to the activation of significant warning levels (orange in some areas).
