'El Roto' wins the Madrid Daily Journalism Award for his exemplary career

Cartoonist and painter Andrés Rábago, known as "El Roto," has been honored in the 21st edition of the Madrid Daily Journalism Prize. The jury, which met to deliver its verdict at the headquarters of the Association of European Journalists, agreed by a majority to award him the prize, "thus recognizing an exemplary and sustained career spanning half a century, which has shaped several generations of Spaniards."

"A dazzling painter and cartoonist, he has been able to interpret the problems, concerns, and enigmas of our society on a daily basis, achieving this with a unique personality and the skill inherited from Goya and Solana . His humor, a very serious humor, a direct descendant of Cervantes , has helped him to deal with his subjects in a shrewd and luminous manner, even in the darkest and most gloomy subjects. Even in these, his responsibility, independence, and incorruptible freedom have never prevented him from being a good man, " states the award's verdict.

The jury in charge of awarding the prize was chaired by the philosopher and essayist José Luis Pardo and comprised of Miguel Ángel Aguilar , president of the Diario Madrid Foundation; José Vicente de Juan , vice-president of the Diario Madrid Foundation; Nativel Preciado , writer and journalist; Ana Zunzarren , former director of EFE TV; Victoria Carvajal , columnist for The Objective; Juan de Oñate , director of the Association of European Journalists; Alfredo Jiménez-Millas , general commercial director of El Confidencial; Andrés Trapiello , writer and columnist, winner of the 20th edition; Marta García Aller , contributor to El Confidencial and Onda Cero, and Carlos Chaguaceda , director of Communications at the Prado Museum.

The Diario Madrid Journalism Prize is endowed with 12,000 euros and a bronze bas-relief , evoking the closure of the Diario Madrid, a work by sculptor Julio López Hernández.

In previous editions, the following have received awards: Andrés Trapiello, Carmen Aristegui, Javier Marías, Francesc de Carreras, Masha Gessen, Katharine Viner, Juan Villoro, Giovanni di Lorenzo, Rafael Jorba, José María Ridao, Mario Vargas Llosa, Philippe Nourry, Hugh Thomas, Francisco Pinto Balsemão, José Javier Uranga, Carlos Sentís and Guillermo Luca de Tena.
