Almost a century later, Lorca arrives in Mexico with a revision of his work "Blood Wedding."

Federico García Lorca (1898-1936) was never able to travel to Mexico; he was murdered in Spain for being a socialist and homosexual just before he made his first visit to the North American country . However, almost 100 years later , his work Blood Wedding (1931) unites these two countries with the same cult: death.

“We all experience profound loss and pain, from decisions we make, and when we watch Blood Wedding, we say, 'I'm not alone.' How we get through this depends on us; we can breathe life or we can breathe death ,” explains actress Ángeles Cruz , who plays the mother in this Mexican version that premiered at the Shakespeare Forum in Mexico City, in an interview.

Lorca decided not to go into exile from Spain , despite the offers from nations such as Colombia and Mexico just before the start of the civil war, a month after its outbreak, he was shot in his hometown of Granada, the same one he could not leave because of the love he felt for his land.

For the director of this play, Angélica Rogel, the writer and playwright continues to exist in the imagination of both Mexican and Spanish society. Furthermore, she adds, his work continues to be performed so frequently thanks to its great ability to connect with people.

“He found the connecting point of human pain, of the drive between life and death,” he says.

Blood Wedding is a tragedy in which Lorca narrates the conflict "between desire and duty" ; with a bride who runs away with her former lover on her wedding day, triggering a fatal confrontation.

As for the reinterpretation, Rogel brings this drama to present-day northern Mexico through musical genres such as the corridos of Mexican singer Peso Pluma, rancheras, and costumes featuring jeans, boots, and typical cowboy hats.

“When Lorca spoke or wrote about duende (that dark and profound force that he associated with the authenticity of art), he felt that if any other territory had a communion with that duende, it was Mexico , even though he didn't know it,” Rogel says.

A century later, Mexico awaits darkness, closing each year with more than 30,000 murders and a missing person count exceeding 127,000; data consistent with the intense violence plaguing the northern states of the country.

" The play takes place in the north of the country, a land of heat and blood . It's one of the most problematic areas in terms of drug trafficking and violence. Although in this version we don't mention these issues at all (...) It's very good that we tell the story there," explains Ana Guzmán Quintero, the actress who plays the bride.

The Lorca woman

This story reflects women of all generations and roles within the family, in a game that Lorca proposed by not naming any of his protagonists, only their kinship.

In a country where matriarchs are the breadwinners of families who suffer the loss of their loved ones, the poet anticipated the character that many Mexican mothers would have to demonstrate to overcome such adversity.

Lorca is very Mexican in the way he describes mothers . This mother is worrying, but strong, determined, and bitter, too. And she shows how difficult it is to make decisions in a reality as violent as Mexico,” Cruz concludes.
