Guadalajara, Mexico, has been hosting the exhibition Las Hijas del Jazz (The Daughters of Jazz ), the new project by renowned Spanish photographer Omar Ayyashi , since June 6th. It opens as part of the 40th Guadalajara International Film Festival (FICG), one of the most important film events in Latin America. The exhibition, which will be on view for two months at the Galería Librería Carlos Fuentes, offers a visual and audio journey to the heart of the 20th-century female avant-garde.
Inspired by the subversive glamour of 1920s and 1930s Hollywood , The Daughters of Jazz is a tribute to the women who broke the mold through art, words, and freedom. Ayyashi portrays prominent contemporary Spanish actresses—such as Cayetana Guillén Cuervo, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Milena Smit, Ana Rujas, and Clara Lago—to revive the legacy of pioneers like Virginia Woolf, María Zambrano, Gabriela Mistral, and María Teresa León, bridging the gap between eras and generations.
The exhibition includes 36 large-format photographs accompanied by 60 additional works from private collections , all curated by Alejandro Romero Sánchez and Juan Carlos Moya. Each portrait is enriched with a sound dimension: a literary audio performed by the actress portrayed, accessible via QR codes alongside the work. This immersive layer transforms the exhibition into a complete sensorial experience, connecting the image with the voice and emotion of the text.
" This exhibition is a journey between eras and continents . A tribute to all the women who blazed trails and to those who today walk them with freedom, beauty, and determination," says Omar Ayyashi, who will be in Guadalajara from June 4 to 9 to participate in the festival's main events.
Following its premiere in Mexico, the exhibition will embark on an international tour that will take it to key events such as the San Sebastián and Huelva Film Festivals in Spain, and to countries like the Philippines, Brazil, and Colombia. This global tour is sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of its cultural diplomacy program.
The Daughters of Jazz not only celebrates the expressive freedom of women in art, but also forms part of a broader strategy for the international projection of Spanish culture , positioning photography and contemporary creation as tools for intercultural dialogue.
