Residents of the Canary Islands aren't the only ones fed up with tourism and gentrification . Residents of the iconic Notting Hill , which gave its name to one of the most famous rom-coms of all time, appear to be fed up with the hordes of influencers congregating outside their properties. In response, they've gone on the offensive and are painting their homes black to keep the crowds away, The Standard reports.
Londoners living just yards from another world-famous street ( Portobello Road, famous for its appearance in The Rookie Witch ) say they have to constantly endure tourists taking pictures outside their homes, which are famous for their brightly colored exteriors. Residents of one pink house and another blue one have decided to paint both properties black, a color they said doesn't look good on Instagram. Another has painted the entrance and lower half of their property the same dark shade to discourage photo-ops.

Thousands of people pass through the doors of these houses every year, leaving mountains of trash and, according to residents, sometimes even trying to gain access to their homes. As it is a brightly colored street often mistaken for the location where Richard Curtis 's Notting Hill was filmed, neighbors sometimes encounter unpleasant experiences, such as people climbing the railings to take photos.

In fact, residents even sent a letter, which the outlet reported, explaining: "It's clear that the bright colors of the houses are a great photo op for your social media accounts . While we all value the charm of our street, the unintended consequence has been an increase in disruptive tourism."
A resident who preferred not to be named stated that this is truly invasive and excessive tourism, without any reason: " We're not a museum ." The influx of people began during the COVID era, when they must have appeared on some influencer list . "They're like sheep," the resident explains. "They followed us."
"Every 30 seconds there's a new group. You can't ask people to stop; you'd be there all day asking them not to litter or to be quiet," he said.
