"I grew up in Los Angeles, where the Day of the Dead and Mexican art had a huge influence on me. Here, death is experienced differently, with color, with symbols. I always felt that better reflected how I feel about life and death," he said.
More than a technical talk, the meeting became a window into his creative sensibility. Burton explained that many of his stories are born from intuitive drawings. Some become films, others remain on paper, but all, he asserted, have an emotional root.
"These types of spaces, like the exhibition we have here, represent for me how the creative process works. Sometimes everything starts with a stroke, and you don't know what it's going to become," he explained.
When asked about his defining style, the creator of films like "Beetlejuice" and "Edward Scissorhands" was clear: he doesn't want to be pigeonholed.
"I just do what comes naturally to me. I don't want to overanalyze or pigeonhole myself. Since I was a child, I've been uncomfortable with labels. We're all different, and we all have value."
