Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar at the Governors Awards

The mission is finally accomplished: Tom Cruise will receive an honorary Oscar, the Hollywood Academy announced Tuesday , honoring the actor and producer's rich career, during which he never won the coveted statuette.
The 62-year-old actor, who just wrapped up the " Mission: Impossible " saga, is widely considered one of the last great movie stars, capable of filling theaters with his name alone.
After the Covid pandemic, the stunt enthusiast was even hailed as Hollywood's savior thanks to the success of " Top Gun: Maverick ," for which he once again donned the fighter pilot suit.
But despite four Oscar nominations - as an actor for " Born on the Fourth of July ," " Jerry Maguire " and " Magnolia ," and as a producer for " Top Gun: Maverick" - he had never won a single award until now.

"Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunt community has inspired us all," Academy President Janet Yang said in a statement.
Cruise will receive this honorary Oscar on November 16, during the Governors Awards ceremony , an annual event celebrating the awards given by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).
The Academy also announced other honorary Oscars that will be presented that day: to actress Debbie Allen, production designer Wynn Thomas, and country music singer Dolly Parton , recognized for her humanitarian commitment.

These awards will celebrate "four legendary individuals whose extraordinary careers and commitment to our film community continue to leave a lasting impact," Yang said in a statement.
For her part, Parton, who has been nominated twice for an Oscar as a composer and performer of songs for films such as 'Nine to Five' and 'Transamerica,' is being recognized for her charitable work.
"Beloved performer Dolly Parton exemplifies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable work," Yang said.
Actress, choreographer, director, and producer Debbie Allen will be honored for her pioneering work over a career spanning nearly five decades. Allen choreographed the Oscars seven times, and some of her career highlights include "Forget Paris," "A Jazzman's Blues," and "The Six Triple Eight."
In turn, Wynn Thomas's "visionary vision and mastery of his craft" made him eligible for this honorary award. Thomas' film credits include "Do the Right Thing" and "Malcolm X," among many others. The event will be held at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at the Ovation Hollywood in Los Angeles on November 16, 2025.
