Mexico seeks to attract investment after settling tariffs with the United States

Mexico City.- Once the tariff issue with the United States is resolved, Mexico will redouble its efforts to attract foreign investment , said Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón , head of the Ministry of Economy.
The official emphasized that the nation remains one of the most attractive destinations for foreign capital because producing in Mexico is more competitive than in other countries, which strengthens its position among trading partners in the U.S. market , the largest in the world.
"We're working on this every day, but now that we've finalized the outcome of the tariffs, we're clearly going to step up our pace," Ebrard said during the signing of the Economic Development Hub for Well-being in Puebla , a project that seeks to boost investment and regional development.
Eighty-four percent of Mexican exports face no tariffs , while other nations, except China, do. Therefore, Mexico has the opportunity to establish itself as a reliable supplier of electric vehicles, semiconductors, and medicines .
President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo has emphasized the importance of boosting the country's technological capacity , including the production of electric cars with the Olinia project, as well as strengthening the pharmaceutical industry to reduce dependence on imports and offer more affordable medicines to the United States and the world.
Ebrard emphasized that this approach represents a historic shift in strategic sectors, including semiconductor production and design in Mexico , an area of high global demand that positions the country as a key player in technology.
At the same time, the Ministry of Economy has strengthened supervision of domestic trade to combat technical smuggling in the textile industry and other sectors. Over the past year, 42 customs agencies' licenses were revoked, and 14 large companies operating illegally were closed.
In addition, new tariff measures will be implemented on footwear , including the closure of establishments that do not comply with the law. Ebrard emphasized that "any form of smuggling is an attack on the life of Mexico," although he acknowledged that solving this problem will take time and sustained effort.
Over the next 90 days, through October 31 , the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will negotiate tariff reductions on Mexican steel and aluminum imports with the United States. These talks will define Mexico's competitiveness compared to other countries and strengthen its appeal as an investment destination.
Ebrard also clarified that, at these negotiating tables, security issues are no longer part of the agenda, focusing exclusively on trade and economic development, ensuring a more favorable environment for national investors and companies .
With these strategic steps, Mexico strengthens its role as a leader in foreign direct investment , focusing on high-value sectors such as electromobility, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals , in addition to strengthening customs surveillance and combating illegal practices that affect competitiveness.
The country is positioned as a reliable destination for foreign capital, with a regulatory framework that seeks to promote technological innovation and industrial development, guaranteeing solid opportunities for local and international companies.
