Querétaro records a decrease in employers

Querétaro, Querétaro. The number of employers and self-employed workers registered an annual decline in the first quarter of the year, while, conversely, the number of subordinate workers grew faster than the increase in the employed population.
Employer statistics decreased by 16.3% due to the loss of 11,660 records in one year, dropping from 71,606 to 59,946 people employed in this way, between the first quarter of 2024 and the same period in 2025, reports the quarterly edition of the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE), of the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).
Therefore, it is the type of employment that decreased the most in the last year, in contrast to the overall working population, which grew 3.8% in the state.
The number of self-employed individuals also decreased, registering an annual increase of -5.3%, representing 13,201 fewer people, as this segment fell from 248,342 to 235,141 self-employed individuals.
In contrast, the number of paid subordinate workers increased by 8.3% during the reference period; it is the position that grew the most among occupational types, gaining 67,369 registrations in one year, rising from 808,581 to 875,950 people employed in these positions.
The number of unpaid workers increased by 3.1%, adding 653 jobs. In the first quarter of 2024, the number stood at 21,067, and a year later, at 21,720.
Of the employed population, 73.4% are paid subordinate workers, 19.7% are self-employed, 5% are employers, and 1.8% are unpaid workers, as of the first quarter of 2025.
Due to the distribution of each segment in the last year, subordinate and paid workers increased their share by 3.1 percentage points (from 70.3 to 73.4%); the contribution of self-employed workers decreased by 1.9 percentage points (from 21.6 to 19.7%), and the contribution of employers decreased by 1.2 points (from 6.2 to 5%).
Sectors
The survey also revealed that 63% of the employed population work in the tertiary sector, in activities such as commerce, restaurants, services, etc.
Additionally, 32.7% work in secondary activities such as manufacturing, mining, and construction. And 4.1% of the employed are in the primary sector, working in agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting, or fishing.
Regarding the scope and size of economic units, 80.8% of the employed population worked in non-agricultural businesses and 4.1% in agricultural businesses; 15.2% did not specify.
Among non-agricultural units, 45% were employed in microbusinesses; the remainder were employed in small establishments (14.1%), medium-sized (10.3%), large (21.4%), government (4.2%), and other types of units (5%).
