Retirees will receive an average of 1,505.9 euros in June, almost 3,000 with the extra

In June, the average retirement pension reached 1,505.9 euros per month , a very similar amount to the 1,505 euros in May, according to figures released this Friday by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration.

Furthermore, as every year, with the arrival of summer, pensioners—who receive their pension in 14 installments—receive their first extra payment between June 21st and 16th. The second extra payment is received in November for Christmas. The amount is equivalent to the amount they normally receive during the rest of the year. In other words, during the month of June, pensioners, like many workers, receive two payments: their regular monthly pension and the extra June pension . Thus, this year, the extra payment for retired workers is €1,484.30 on average.

The differences between the amounts received by those who retired after having contributed as self-employed workers to the Special Regime for Self-Employed Workers (RETA) and those registered under the General Regime as employees are not surprising. With a difference of more than 600 euros for the average retirement pension, the former received 1,009.1 euros per month on average, while the latter received 1,665.5 euros. The same scenario occurs for those governed by the Mining and Coal Regime, whose average amount reaches 2,905.2 euros; and for those registered under the Sea Regime, 1,666.9 euros.

Payments, low birth rates, and an aging society are the main factors straining the finances of an already destabilized pension system— as this newspaper reported . This month, Social Security has paid a total of 10,342,975 pensions to more than 9.3 million people, with a payroll amounting to €13.56 billion in June, a month in which the extraordinary payment to all Social Security pensioners was also paid, amounting to €13.21 billion. In total, the total state disbursement for various pensions (retirement, permanent disability, widowhood, orphanhood, and for family members) exceeds €26.77 billion .

Of the more than thirteen billion invested in the payment of the monthly payroll of contributory pensions, not counting the extra, almost three-quarters corresponded to retirement pensions , 73% of the total with 9,914.5 million .

The impact of incentives for delayed retirement, as well as the improved reconfiguration of the early retirement framework, have driven the increase in this type of retirement, which now represents 11.4% of new registrations , up from 4.8% in 2019. Meanwhile, 71% of registrations occur at the ordinary retirement age, 10 percentage points more than in 2019.

It is worth noting the difference in the average retirement age in 2025 compared to 2019. While it currently stands at 65.2 years , in 2019 it was 64.4 years.
