Scottie Scheffler becomes a three-time major golf champion

Scottie Scheffler becomes a three-time major golf champion

Scottie Scheffler became a three-time major golf champion by winning the 2025 PGA Championship with a 273 strokes (11 under par) on Sunday.

The 28-year-old had already won The Masters in 2022 and 2024, which were his first majors. Now he's crowned himself at Charlotte's Quail Hollow Club, reaching three stars in this category on the PGA Tour, in addition to receiving $3.42 million.

But for Scheffler, who currently holds the top spot in the world golf rankings, the number of titles isn't a concern.

  • Bupa Championship.

“After this week, I'll go home to prepare for next week's tournament, and the show goes on. If I show up and don't make the cut next week, I'll have to answer questions about what went wrong and start from scratch. That's one of the things that can be frustrating about our game, and it's also the best thing about our game.”

Second place in the 2025 PGA Championship was shared among fellow Americans: Bryson DeChambeau, Harris English, and Davis Riley. Meanwhile, the highest-placed Latin American was Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas (T5 with 279 strokes).

Scheffler reached 15 PGA Tour titles, a legacy that began in February 2022 with the WM Phoenix Open. His victories also include a double win at The Players Championship (2023 and 2024), as well as the 2024 Tour Championship.

Another interesting fact is that Scheffler won the PGA Championship a year after being arrested for an alleged traffic violation at Valhalla. The charges were quickly dropped, but the golfer spent the run-up to his second round of the 2024 edition of the tournament in a jail cell.

“I have some jokes I want to tell, but I'll probably keep them to myself. Last year still doesn't seem real to me sometimes. It really doesn't. It's one of those things I don't know how to describe. But I can tell you, it's pretty sweet sitting here with the trophy this year,” the champion joked.

It is worth noting that the PGA Championship reached a decade in the hands of American champions: 2016 with Jimmy Walker, 2017 and 2022 with Justin Thomas, 2018, 2019 and 2023 with Brooks Koepka, 2020 with Collin Morikawa, 2021 with Phil Mickelson, 2024 with Xander Schauffele and 2025 with Scottie Scheffler.

The last non-American champion of the major was Australian Jason Day in 2014; before that, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy won twice (2012 and 2014).

The PGA Championship was the second major of the 2025 PGA Tour season. The first was The Masters in April, which was won by Rory McIlroy.

The third will be in June: the US Open, held in Pennsylvania, while the fourth and final will be in July with The Open, to be held in Northern Ireland.

“I'm really proud of how we battled this week. I struggled with my swing the first few days. I didn't have as good a preparation week as I had hoped, and it was a tough four-day battle,” added Scottie Scheffler, who also took the opportunity to express his gratitude to his PGA Championship caddie, Ted Scott.

In addition to his 15 PGA Tour titles, Scheffler is also a two-time champion on the Korn Ferry Tour, twice on the Hero World Challenge, and won a gold medal for the United States at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
