The SEPE will remove part of the unemployment benefits from the unemployed starting this date.

The SEPE will remove part of the unemployment benefits from the unemployed starting this date.

Unemployment benefits, or contributory unemployment benefits, are the largest amounts of aid available to people who have lost their jobs, but they are subject to various regulations that affect, among other things, their amounts.

As has been the case with benefits since the implementation of the welfare reform, the unemployment benefit received by an unemployment beneficiary decreases as the period of collecting this contributory benefit progresses .

The General Social Security Law makes this clear in Article 270 ( you can consult it at this link ): the amount of unemployment benefits is 70% of the worker's regulatory base. This regulatory base is composed of the average of the unemployment contribution bases in the 180 days prior to the event, excluding overtime.

However, this amount is not final: starting on the 181st day of payment, the regulatory base is reduced by 10% and the amount will drop to 60% of the regulatory base until the benefit is completely exhausted.

This change was approved at the end of 2022 by the coalition government and represents an additional 10%. Before the reform, unemployment benefits from the 181st day of payment were 50% of the regulatory base until the date on which the right to receive them expired.

Minimum and maximum unemployment benefits

These amounts, however, are limited by minimum and maximum amounts determined by law. The SEPE website lists the specific amounts:

  • The minimum unemployment benefit is 560 euros per month and rises to 749 euros per month if the beneficiary has dependent children.
  • The maximum unemployment benefit is 1,225 euros per month and rises to 1,400 euros per month if the beneficiary has one dependent child, and to 1,575 euros per month if the beneficiary has two or more dependent children.
How long can you collect unemployment benefits?

The General Social Security Law explains in Article 269 that "the duration of unemployment benefits will depend on the periods of employment with contributions in the six years prior to becoming legally unemployed or the moment the obligation to contribute ceased." The following equivalences are contemplated:

  • With between 360 and 539 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 120 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 540 and 719 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 180 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 720 and 899 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 240 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 900 and 1,079 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 300 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,080 and 1,259 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 360 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,260 and 1,439 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 420 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,440 and 1,619 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 480 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,620 and 1,799 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 540 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,800 and 1,979 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 600 days of unemployment benefits.
  • With between 1,980 and 2,159 days of contributions, it is possible to collect 660 days of unemployment benefits.
  • After 2,160 days of contributions, 720 days of unemployment benefits are paid, the maximum.
