Tropical Wave 2, extreme heat, and a possible cyclone will hit Mexico this weekend.

A weekend of adverse weather conditions is expected across much of the country due to the interaction of several weather systems, including Tropical Wave 2, a low-pressure area with a high probability of hurricane development , and the persistent heat wave, according to the National Meteorological Service.

These conditions will bring heavy rain, strong winds, high waves, and temperatures above 45°C in various regions on Saturday, June 7 and Sunday, June 8.

Saturday: heavy rains and stifling heat

On Saturday, June 7, a low-pressure zone with cyclonic potential off the South Pacific coast (interacting with the monsoon trough) will bring very heavy to intense rainfall to Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas. The rainfall will be accompanied by high waves (up to 4.5 meters) and wind gusts of up to 70 km/h in coastal areas.

Additionally, heavy rains are expected in Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Puebla, and Veracruz, while the center and north of the country will experience showers, winds, and the possibility of whirlwinds in eastern Chihuahua and northwestern Coahuila.

The heat will persist, with temperatures potentially exceeding 45°C in Sonora, Chihuahua (west and southwest), and Sinaloa (north), in addition to temperatures between 40 and 45°C in Coahuila, Durango, Nayarit, Jalisco, Michoacán, Guerrero, and Campeche.

Sunday: Cyclone effects intensify

By Sunday, June 8, the low-pressure system is expected to strengthen into a potential tropical cyclone , moving parallel to the coasts of Michoacán, Colima, and Jalisco. Its cloud formations will increase the potential for very heavy to intense rainfall in Guerrero and Chiapas, as well as heavy rain in Oaxaca, Jalisco, Colima, and Michoacán.

The northern region will continue to be affected by a dry line and a low-pressure trough, which, combined with the subtropical jet stream and an approaching cold front, will generate strong winds, dust storms, and possible whirlwinds or tornadoes in Coahuila.

Extreme heat will persist across much of the country. Highs above 45°C are expected in Sonora and Chihuahua, and between 40 and 45°C in the western, northeastern, and southeastern states.

Authorities warn that heavy rains could cause landslides, flash floods, and swollen rivers and streams in vulnerable areas. Winds and high waves also pose a risk to coastal areas of the South Pacific.

As the heat wave continues, it is recommended to avoid prolonged sun exposure, stay hydrated, and take precautions against possible forest fires due to dry air and gusty winds.
