Unemployment rate in Mexico increased in May

This Friday, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) announced the unemployment figures reached in Mexico during the month of May of this year.
It is worth remembering that last April , the unemployment rate reached 2.5% of the population. Economically Active Population (EAP) —the total number of people of working age who have a job or are actively looking for one—: 60 million people were employed during April, 154 thousand more than in the same month in 2024 .
Compared to April 2024, the unemployed population increased by 83 thousand people and the Unemployment Rate (UR) was lower by 0.1 percentage points , detailed Inegi.

The EAP in the fourth month of the year reached 61.7 million people aged 15 and over , which represented a participation rate of 59.5% and an active population 237,000 people higher than that of May 2024 .
The people underemployed , that is, those who declared having the need and availability to work more hours, were 4.3 million, 7.1% of the employed population , a decrease of 187 thousand people compared to May 2024 .
Informal workersThis sector totaled 32.9 million people in April, which increased the informality rate to 54.9% .

By gender , the female EAP in May was 24.6 million and the male EAP was 35.4 million , with a participation rate of 45.8% among women of working age and 74.9% among men .
The figures reflect Mexico's economic performance, which grew 0.2% in the first quarter of the year , despite recession warnings due to US trade uncertainty and GDP growth of 1.5% in 2024 .
