Where is it more expensive to die?: In Segovia or Madrid, prices are up to 34% higher than in Soria

A 45-year-old Spaniard pays on average just over €6,000 for funeral insurance until age 84, broken down to €154 per month. However, this cost is not uniform across the country. With the constant rise in prices, dying is now more expensive in some provinces, such as Segovia , where one can pay up to €7,554 for such insurance, and Madrid , with a price of €7,434.
Given that these types of insurance policies are typically taken out at age 45 and cover the insured until age 84—the average life expectancy in Spain—the total cost over 39 years amounts to €6,020 . This amount guarantees comprehensive coverage, including funeral expenses, legal assistance, psychological support, and administrative procedures, among other benefits.
The price difference occurs because "the final price of the insurance is adjusted, in part, to the average cost of funeral services in each province ," explains Pablo Pareles , director of Roams Insurtech, the insurance brokerage that analyzed the data of five insurance companies in Spain (FIATC, Generali, Europea Seguros, Helvetia and DKV).
An average funeral—without insurance—can cost anywhere from €3,500 to €7,500 in densely populated areas such as the Community of Madrid, Catalonia, Cantabria, and Asturias , the regions with the highest costs. Furthermore, other services that increase the price are also taken into account. According to data from Generali, choosing a specific type of burial monument, such as a grave or mausoleum, selecting a niche in a particular area, and extending the concession period granted by the city council for burial all incur additional costs.
This also explains why funeral insurance policies are more expensive. For example, someone from Madrid or Segovia pays up to 34% more for the same coverage as someone in Soria , where the average price is €5,027, the lowest in the country. "These differences reflect the average cost of living and the costs of funeral homes and crematoriums, which are significantly higher in large cities and metropolitan areas," confirms Pareles.
Following Madrid and Segovia, policy prices are also higher than average in Lleida , where the cost is €7,106, and in Girona , with costs reaching up to €7,100. On the other hand, death is cheaper in provinces such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife (€5,114), Zamora (€5,315), and Melilla (€5,336). These figures were calculated using a combined policy with coverage for funeral, transport, and assistance for a 45-year-old.
