Working hours: What is known about the proposed Saturday bonus?

On September 2, the Chamber of Deputies received two initiatives from the Baja California Congress regarding working hours, which were referred to committees for analysis. Among the highlights is the proposal to create a Saturday bonus, a benefit currently lacking in the Federal Labor Law (LFT) .
According to the initiative submitted to the Labor and Social Security Committee, Articles 59, 69, and 71 of the Federal Labor Law are proposed to be amended to establish a 40-hour workweek. During this period, workers must enjoy at least one day of rest with full pay, ensuring that these rest days are on Saturdays and Sundays.
The striking element of these proposals is that they specifically state that those who work on Saturdays and Sundays will receive a minimum additional bonus of 25% on top of their regular workday salary. Currently, the legislation provides for the Sunday bonus, but there is no extra payment for working on Saturdays, Therefore, the reform initiative seeks to balance the workload and recognize the sacrifices of those who work shifts on weekends, regardless of the day.
On the other hand, the second initiative was referred to the Constitutional Affairs Committee and proposes amending Section IV of Article 123, Section A, of the Political Constitution to specify that for every 40 hours of work , one mandatory day of rest with full pay must be granted.
With these proposals, the Baja California Congress seeks to place on the national agenda a debate that could mean improved labor rights, especially for those who work extended hours or on weekends.
The Board of Directors of theChamber of Deputies reported that the analysis will continue in the relevant committees, and the direction of these reforms will be determined in upcoming sessions.
