Do you have a project that improves people's health through cycling? They've launched a call for proposals to support it.

Do you have a project that improves people's health through cycling? They've launched a call for proposals to support it.
Pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk and the European Cyclists Federation (ECF) announced the launch of the global call for proposals for The Healthy Cycling Challenge . The initiative aims to fund innovative projects focused on improving urban environments and promoting health and well-being in communities around the world. Three projects will be selected globally, each receiving funding of up to USD 100,000.

The benefits of cycling
The initiative arose because cycling is not just a simple physical activity, but a powerful tool for promoting public health. According to experts, integrating cycling into our daily routines significantly reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as obesity, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. Furthermore, every time we choose to pedal instead of driving, we give the planet a break, reducing polluting emissions and enjoying cleaner air.
But the benefits of cycling go even further. It also offers an inclusive transportation option for communities that are often underserved. Bicycles are affordable, whether you own one or use bike-share systems, providing vulnerable communities with better access to jobs, education, and healthcare.
That's why Novo Nordisk and the European Cycling Federation launched the Healthy Cycling Challenge. "We're looking for innovative ideas with growth potential that use the bicycle as a means of active transportation and as a tool to promote public health, environmental sustainability, and social equity. Whether it's urban design projects that prioritize people, bold policy initiatives, or community projects that improve health, well-being, climate resilience, and social cohesion—any proposal that makes a difference," said Saul Cardozo, Director of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability at Novo Nordisk Colombia.

Projects must align with at least one of these two principles:
  1. Active and Accessible Neighborhoods: Encourage daily cycling in local communities, ensuring all residents can choose to cycle for short, safe trips.
  2. Resilient and Equitable Infrastructure: Create or improve safe, durable cycling infrastructure designed for all people.
Additionally, we invite the incorporation of two optional principles that further enrich the proposal. On the one hand, vibrant and safe public spaces; and on the other, integrated and connected destinations. “These principles emphasize the creation of dynamic and safe public spaces, and the connection of cycling with other modes of transport and key destinations. Together, the four principles align with the vision of cities where cycling is integrated into healthy, green, and inclusive urban life,” Cardozo explained.
This initiative is a call for projects around the world that promote public policies that ensure cycling reaches underserved areas through affordable bike sharing, incentives, and targeted funding.
