Is it dangerous to eat too much protein? Medical experts warn of risks in absolute keto diets.

Although high-protein diets aren't known to cause medical problems, there are extremes it's best not to go to. For example, the carnivore diet, which eliminates almost all carbohydrates in favor of animal-based foods. Keep in mind that if you're aiming for a high-protein diet, it can also include all kinds of foods and still be healthy.
In general, high-protein diets promote short-term weight loss because they make you feel full. However, following a high-protein diet for too long can lead to some health problems, according to the Mayo Clinic. Furthermore, researchers continue to study the long-term risks of high-protein diets that limit carbohydrates.
Some high-protein diets, especially the more restrictive versions like carnivore diets, limit carbohydrate intake so much that you may not get the nutrients and fiber you need. This can cause problems such as bad breath, headaches, and constipation.
Some high-protein diets allow the consumption of red meat, processed meats, and other foods high in saturated fat. These foods can increase the risk of heart disease. They can also increase low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, the "bad" cholesterol.

A high-protein diet can worsen kidney function in people with kidney disease. This may happen because the body may not be able to eliminate all the waste from broken down proteins.
If you want to follow a protein-rich diet, choose your protein intake carefully. Avoid processed meats. Choose nutrient-dense proteins, such as the following:
- Soy protein
- Beans and other legumes such as lentils
- Nuts and seeds
- Fish
- Lean skinless chicken
- Lean meats and pork
- Low-fat dairy products
- Egg whites
Before starting a weight-loss diet, talk to a healthcare professional. This is especially important if you have kidney disease, diabetes, or other chronic health conditions.
