Surveillance Committee issues epidemiological warning for measles

The National Epidemiological Surveillance System (Sinave), of the Ministry of Health, reported that up to epidemiological week 25 (June 15 to 21), 6,522 probable cases of measles or rubella have been reported, and 2,597 confirmed cases of measles have been identified.
Therefore, the National Committee for Epidemiological Surveillance issued an epidemiological advisory to encourage health personnel to detect and report probable cases of measles or rubella.
In comparison, in the United States, 1,227 confirmed cases of measles and three deaths have been reported, until June 25. Most of the infections are concentrated in Texas (750 of the total).

In 2021, 1,403 probable cases of measles or rubella were reported; in 2022, 2,536; and in 2023, 2,208; however, no cases were laboratory-confirmed.
Last year, a total of 3,444 probable cases of measles or rubella were investigated, of which 7 were confirmed as measles.
Likewise, Sinave specified that another 1,472 cases of possible measles infection are under investigation , and 2,453 cases have been ruled out.
Sinave highlights that 92% of infected people had no history of having been vaccinated; 3.8% had one dose of MMR and 3.9% had two or more doses of MMR in their vaccination record.

The most affected age group is the 25 to 29 age group with 14.9% (386), followed by the 30 to 34 age group with 12.3% (320).
"As part of the containment and vaccination measures, intensive vaccination activities must be carried out with an emphasis on measles prevention through the administration of the triple viral vaccine (MMR). This vaccine should be administered to children 1 year of age and older, with a second dose at 18 months," Sinave stated.
