Shakira cancels World Pride concert

Shakira cancels World Pride concert

Shakira , who was headlining the inaugural World Pride 2025 concert in Washington, abruptly canceled her performance a day before the event due to equipment issues.

"We are deeply saddened that unforeseen circumstances have forced the cancellation" of the concert, Capital Pride Alliance, the main organizer of World Pride , said in a statement Friday. "News regarding the Opening Ceremony program will be shared as soon as it is confirmed!"

The Colombian star was scheduled to headline Saturday night's celebration at National Park. The cancellation is reportedly due to ongoing technical issues related to his Thursday night concert at Boston's Fenway Park, which was canceled hours before the show was scheduled to begin.

Country musician Jason Aldean's scheduled Friday night show at the same venue was also canceled.

"Due to complications with her previous show in Boston, Shakira 's full tour production cannot be relocated to Washington, DC, in time for the planned performance at National Park," the Capital Pride Alliance said. "Despite every effort to make this happen, it is not possible to move forward as planned."

Organizers said the rest of the citywide events program was still on for the weekend and said the opening ceremony would be relocated and reorganized .

The cancellation presents an additional challenge for Capital Pride Alliance , though at least it's not a political one. Organizers had previously stated that they expected international attendance to be significantly affected by the concern and anger within the LGBTQ+ community over President Donald Trump's policies.

Trump's public hostility toward transgender protections and drag shows has already prompted two international LGBTQ+ organizationsEagle Canada and the African Human Rights Coalition — to warn against travel to the United States.

The main concern is that trans or non-binary people will have trouble entering the country if passport control officers enforce the government's strict binary gender view .

Some potential international participants have already announced they will not attend this year's events, either out of fear of harassment or as a boycott of Trump's policies. But others have called for a national mobilization to pack the capital.

Capital Pride Alliance Executive Director Ryan Bos said security fencing would be installed around the concert and the two-day finale on a several-block stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue .

Setbacks

The cancellation of the Washington, D.C., concert follows the previously announced cancellations of the May 29 and 30 shows in Boston, Massachusetts, all attributed to "unforeseen circumstances ."

These incidents are not the first to affect the Women Don't Cry Anymore tour on American soil, which has faced various setbacks since its inception.

Among the most recent, the New Jersey Department of Health reported it is investigating a possible mass measles exposure that occurred during Shakira 's concert at MetLife Stadium. The show was the second stop of the tour in the United States, following its debut in Charlotte, North Carolina.
