The Spanish Immigration Foundation in the Dominican Republic strengthens its presence in Cibao

In its commitment to rescuing and enhancing the historical memory of the generations of Spaniards who emigrated to the Dominican Republic since the 19th century, the Foundation for Spanish Immigration in the Dominican Republic ( Finmiesp ) continues to expand its scope of action nationwide, with a view to rescuing the historical legacy of more than 30,000 Spaniards residing in the country.

This time, the city of Santiago de los Caballeros was the venue for sharing its mission and proposal with the Spanish community residing in the northern region.

The event, held at the Spanish Center, was led by the institution's president, José Vitienes , and was attended by the Spanish ambassador, Lorea Arribalzaga Ceballos, and the Embassy's Minister Counselor, Ignacio Sánchez de Lerín.

Finmiesp , which has already taken its message to various locations, thus reaffirms its purpose of honoring the social, economic, and cultural contributions of Spaniards and their descendants, recognizing their legacy in the construction of Dominican identity.

"We want every family of Spanish origin to know about this project that seeks to preserve the memory of their ancestors , their stories of work, integration, and contributions that remain present in our society," said José Vitienes in his introductory remarks at the meeting.

He explained that the entity seeks to create a historical archive that documents the exodus and adaptation of Spaniards in the country, consolidating a structured account of their impact on Dominican society, economy, and culture.

The presentation in Santiago took place in an atmosphere of dialogue and closeness , bringing together representatives of the Spanish community , allied institutions , descendants and friends of the Foundation.

With this activity, the institution expands its network of collaboration and participation to strengthen its research , documentation, and dissemination of the Hispanic legacy in the Dominican Republic.

The meeting was also attended by Elena Viyella, Manuel García Arévalo and Marcos Cochón, members of the board of directors of Finmiesp , as well as representatives of the social , economic and cultural spheres of the Spanish community residing in the dynamic Cibaeña region.

  • Although there are no exact public figures for Santiago , it is estimated that hundreds of these Spaniards and their descendants live in the Cibao region and the city of Santiago. Furthermore, studies on historical Canarian emigration highlight Santiago de los Caballeros as one of the main population centers for Spanish descendants.
